We can't overstate how important it is to tighten screws to the correct torque – whether you're mounting an optic, installing a red dot mounting plate on a pistol, securing a handguard, or attaching other accessories. We learned this ourselves after years of trial and error, with varying results. These are mistakes (and broken screws) that you don't have to make.

The Real Avid Smart-Torq is one of many torque drivers available on the market. Does it offer anything revolutionary? No. But it is a well-designed kit for working on firearms. The set includes 12 of the most commonly used bits for firearm maintenance, as well as a second, smaller screwdriver that can be used to loosen screws (because you should NOT use a torque driver for that) or as additional leverage when tightening screws that require higher torque.

The torque range is 10–70 in-lb. While these weird units may not mean much to us, it's worth remembering that many US-based sources and product manuals specify screw torque in precisely these units.

Important – unless you're a home gunsmith, you'll probably only use the torque driver occasionally, so buying one may not seem worthwhile. In that case, consider pooling your money with your friends at the range so that at least one person in your group has one of these tools.
